LECTURES

Week 1 (4/1/2022)

Contrast and Gestalt theory

(i) Contrast -

Definition of contrast is the juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements. It provides visual interest, emphasizes a point, and expresses content.

(ii) Gestalt theory -

Gestalt theory is when the human brain visualizes every object or views the idea of every pattern given, that way it becomes a certain form.

Emphasis and Balance

(i) Emphasis -

Emphasis is used to create a design where it is focused on each element such as color, shapes, or value, to achieve dominance.

(ii) Balance -

Balanced is used to stable every work of design to ease the public eye. Balance can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Repetition and Movement -

(i) Repetition -

Repetition is when the work of design puzzles your mind into wondering where is the focused unknown is.

(ii) Movement -

In every work of design, designers use the kinds of shapes, forms, lines, and curves to play with your mind into thinking it creates a certain movement.

Harmony and Unity -

(i) Harmony -

Harmony creates a certain calmness into the design, to sort of creating a mood and aesthetics.

(ii) Unity -

Unity is similar to repetition where all repetitive designs come and unite.

Symbol, Image, and Word -

(i) Symbol -

The symbol is a certain logo that represents your design.

(ii) Image and Word -

Image and word help the public eye to recognize your design and understands the meaning of your work.

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 1: Exercises

Week 2 (11/1/2022)

For this exercise I decided to use repetition, I too decided to think outside the box and look at architecture drawings in Disney movies such as Cinderella, Frozen, and Beauty and The Beast. I wanted to bring out the castle-like doors and spiral stairs to show that there is a pattern.

Fig1.3 Door reference

After I kept all my references, I sketched a little drawing before I did the line art.
Deciding to do a repetition design can be quite tricky to arrange, especially a design that requires architecture. Towards the end, it became how I imagined it would be. A spacious spiral stair with an upwards perspective, and doors designed with certain elements that fits the object itself.

FEEDBACK

week 2 (13/1/22)

Written feedback - Repetition is all about understanding what the pattern says about the object or what it was created for. It can come from different elements and still can be seen in a pattern.

REFLECTION

Understanding how to do these exercises is quite a struggle for me, as I try to find a way to create a new design of repetition. I tried thinking outside the box too, knowing that there are the same designs that have been created by other artists. However, I managed to find a way by being inspired by all the Disney movies, such as Tangled, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen. One of the reasons why I find it inspiring is because the landscape designs have the same thing in common, such as the spiral stairs, repetitive doors that have a grand opening, and huge hallways. I decided to create my own design by creating a portrait of the tower with spiral stairs.
