Project 2 | Sense of Place

Lectures

Week 5 (1/2/2022)

This week's lecture is about taking notes on how to solve a problem by spectating it, understanding it, and creating questions in your head to figure out the solution to the problem. In this case, we are looking at every designer's point of view and how they look at certain designs or a product or even a certain place by observing the idea of it. Sort of like therapists, where they understand what every human is going through, However; like I said, a designer's point of view is different. Being observing something has different techniques, such as understanding the smell, the sense of hearing, the view coming from your eyes, the touch, and the taste.

There are many different ways of figuring out the difference in observation.

  • Understanding the product or the subject you or someone has created.
  • Challenge yourself and discover something new about yourself that you have not discovered yet or thought of yet.
  • The idea of being outside instead of staying inside, there are a lot more things or places to discover in the outside world. (despite covid, please stay safe and sanitize yourself)
  • Play games and test your mind whether or not you are able to keep up with how fast the movement goes.
  • Vlog yourself, keep up with the memory you have created each day that you might look back at one day, once you grow older.
  • Analyze what and who you want to be as a person one day. Will it change? or will you stay the same?
Sense of place

Find and discover a place where you think it's worth it and how often you spend your time there. Observe your last memory together with your thoughts.

Why did it bring you there?
Why did u decide to come back here?
What does it feel like?

INSTRUCTIONS

Week 5 (3/2/2022)

I had to look back at what I wanted to go for and find out what inspires me to observe more on where I've been at. Therefore I decided to look back at the vlogs that I used to create when I was younger. I stopped vlogging when I turned 20, I happened to grow out of it. It doesn't mean I'm done with vlogging, I just happened to find my life not interesting anymore.

Looking back at these videos gives me the nostalgia feeling back when I used to study in INTI for a diploma along with how I have a lot of curfews, which leads me to what I wanted to do, hence my point of the mini-story I told.

Going back to what I said previously, I have been having a lot of curfews. The word curfew means "regulation of someone staying indoors for specified hours, typically at night"
Now it may be a good thing for some people and maybe not for some other people.
Ever since Covid started, my bedroom has been one of my safe spaces. I discovered a lot of things while I was stuck in there, one of which is gaming! not to say I am an e-girl, I am just a girl who wants to play games.

While I'm in my room, regardless of what I'm doing, the more I look around, the more I created my own Illusions. Which lead me to my first sketch here.

I decided to put some mini-posters with swirls on them to create how I felt when I was staying in the room, I can create some sort of Illusion.

As you can see from my bedroom picture, there are no posters but a plain wall. I wanted to create a meaning as I sketched and what I see that no one else can.

Secondly, I did some line art to clean the sketched bit, that way I could color at ease. I put different colors on the swirls to create a meaning for each poster, each color has emotions coming from my story. That's when I want the viewers to use their senses and understand what it meant.

Was it anger?
Was it happiness?
Was it sad?
Was it depression?
who knows.

During that day I looked at color codes inspirations and thought of a dull color but quite a girl-ish perse.
Then I figured out the color purple works well because it brings out the volume to my aesthetics.

I went ahead and colored the bedroom design, I played around with the colors a little
bit and added a shade of blue into it as well.

Fig 1.7 Coloring (7/2/2022)

A few things happened here, it just didn't feel right. It looked too plain, I wanted to add more depth to the drawing especially to the wall to have the same effects as the Illusion in the posters.
That's was when I thought of a Mandala. I sketched a drawing of a Mandala and pursue it with a drawing on the wall. with a few perspectives and distortion. I proceed with the shadows and lighting as well, just to have volume in the drawing.

I could stop there, but I decided to make it a bit more interesting, and experiment by making it a GIF. I gathered all the layers and turn on the animation video frame. I turned on and off for each frame. each frame is 0.5 seconds so it doesn't go too fast and not too slow. The animation is on loop, so I can easily turn it into a GIF once I have to export it.

Once I have exported it, I saved it as a GIF.

FEEDBACKS

Week 6 (10/2/2022)
-Instead of making it blink in that certain direction, I could make the light steady with certain flickering. Go with the television statics. It also gives an ambient vibe to the bedroom. A very nice ambient animated room.

REFLECTION

This was quite an exploration for me, I was looking forward to experimenting with this project and I am glad I dig deeper instead of stopping at one final PDF but instead going further and making a GIF. I am pretty proud of what I have done so far. Especially looking back at my cringey videos just to find inspiration. I'm glad the memories came back. So much love and appreciation for how far I have come.
