Week 6 (13/2/2022)
Visual Analysis - Fluid Art
I was struggling to find some inspiration because there are so many options to look at. I decided to look at a few sketches and paintings of mine. I saw this part in my sketchbook where I drew sea creatures as a challenge for "sea animal" day back in high school. I assume it's a challenge since no one did it except me. Oh well. So I decided to take those sea creatures as an inspiration instead.
Fig 1.1 Sketches
I was Impressed that my drawing is still good because I haven't drawn for quite a while as I have been busy with family and other things. I had no time to focus on my drawings or my character drawings.
Anyway, I admired my jellyfish drawing and thought of adding a watercolor style to it to add texture. Sort of sounds peaceful to me. It does remind me of a children's book.
Fig 1.2 Mushroom of the sea painting
I admire the idea of the sea creatures, if it were to be a live show, a bunch of ballerinas would dance on the stage with cool, blue-toned colors and add a piece of real suttle music for the background. I just think that would blow my mind away.
On that note, I sketched another piece of jellyfish art but add more depth to it as well, so it has movement.
Fig 1.3 Sketch of jellyfish
I duplicate the jellyfish to make it sort of repetitive, I kind of wanna follow the idea of Yin Yang as well, the way it goes around in a circle. It has a very subtle mood to it. I like it.
Fig 1.4 Tree Yin Yang
Observation
The jellyfish painting happens to describe a mixed feeling to me, it sort of brings up children and peace as well as dancing.
It also shows how a family of jellyfish is heading towards the light.
Analysis
The texture of the painting seems to be sort of scratchy just to define the acrylic painting. Not only a brush was used but a certain object was used to create the texture itself. Seems like a few of the jellyfish has awoken and are about to leave their homes and follow the elders elsewhere.
It sort of shows how a family should stick together no matter what. That was probably a definition of the painting.
Interpretation
I would say the jellyfish and the Yin Yang from fig 1.2 and 1.4 are quite similar to one another because I feel like they represent peace and how they happen to flow like the river. I can hear the sound of a flute playing in the background as the jellyfish move, it really just makes me center myself from reality.
Fig 1.5 ocean color palette
I decided to follow the ocean color palette for the background. I played around with what the textures going to look like. I do wanna follow the idea of the watercolor look.
Fig 1.6 background-color
I didn't technically mix those colors, I sort of played around separating those colors quite a bit and adding a smudge texture around it. I then added the jellyfish drawing to the work but I decided to go for white linework instead. It gives a peaceful sound to it.
Fig 1.7 Jellyfish linework
As you can see now it has that watercolor texture and a children's book vibe to it. However, a lot is missing and I needed to add color to the jellyfish. I decided to go for a subtle blue and a warm hot pink to it, so it represents the male and female gender.
Fig 1.8 colored jellyfish
If you look at it now, it showed a bit of that Yin Yang pattern, the story of how the female and the male interact with each other. Sort of both female and male ballerinas dancing with the flow.
I then added bubbles around the jellyfish so that it doesn't look too empty at the sides.
Fig 1.9 " The dancing sea creatures "
Fig 2.0 Final
A lot of the children's books have this type of art and can be quite entertaining to some kids because they can imagine these jellyfish moving as the jellyfish tells the story on their own. As for me, I do like to imagine peaceful music in the background.
REFLECTION
Well, this is a tough one, not gonna lie, I do have to crack my head for this as I have to analyze which is which and what story to tell. Although a lot came to mind about peace, dancing, and sea creatures. Each piece of work has a story to tell no matter what they are. That was something I had struggled with because I have struggled to believe in everything that ever works for every artwork. It was a challenge for me to open up about these theories. They happened to matter.
