Task 3A: Type Design and Communication

Week 8 (16/5/2022)

This week is independent learning which is the week we needed to complete our submission for task 2.
In those 7 days, I took the time to watch the playlist by Mr. Vinod on Task 3A, as well as to create the sketches for our own typography design using the alphabet given.

Week 9 (22/5/2022)

We showed the sketches we did to our lecturer in order to get some feedback. We have to digitize our work right after by using Adobe Illustrator. Once that is done we will be using Font lab to get a consistent view for the readers.

Instructions

Task 3A | Type Design and Communication

We will be tasked to design a limited number of western alphabets. To begin, choose an existing font design that adheres to the direction that you would like to head in. Study the font carefully by analyzing its anatomical parts. Start with rough sketches and upon approval begin digitization of the drawings—software for digitization shall be determined in class. Artworks shall be printed out for critique sessions followed by refinements. If time permits we shall generate the font for actual use. We will endeavor to create a typeface that has the hallmarks of a good typeface; subtlety, character, presence, legibility, and
readability.

Below are the letters you will design:
a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .

We need to choose 3 out of the alphabets provided and it is suggested that we choose a letter with a descender another with an ascender, and one more maybe with a letter "M" which is maybe with me within the X-height. Before we begin, we always need to do our research and look up a good typeface design by google or Pinterest so we could build our possibilities of understanding the direction we could go in to. Once we have done our research we can begin with our sketching, to sketch it is better to go for the letters O, H, T, and A because these constitute the basic letterforms in designing the typeface.

Visual Research

I did some research on the fonts that suit my liking, there were lots of fonts to choose from. Therefore, I chose 2 to 3 inspirations from Pinterest and I will experiment with them while doing my sketching following the font measuring units as shown in Figure 1.0.

I decided to refer back to my sketches (probably do more sketches as well) and understand more about how the letters aligned with the guidelines I just created. I too would like to experiment with these letters whether or not I could simplify them into my own fonts.

I didn't quite like the letters I did from the sketch, therefore I decided to modify them into a better-looking one.

Poster Design Ideas

I made 3 design ideas and tested the fonts in Adobe Illustrator, we were assigned to do a poster as well, therefore 3 designs below.

Looking at the designs I ended up choosing Design #1 because I really like the alignment of the wordings.

Feedback

Week 9 | (23/5/2022)

Specific Feedback
  • The letter 'A' ascender line is well structured and may proceed with it, however lower cap 'a' can be at the bottom joining the second upper cap 'A'.
General Feedback
  • We should be able to understand our letters when we design them.
  • measurements need to be specific.
  • spacings are also important
Week 10 | (30/5/2022)

Specific Feedback
  • Letter sizes are uneven. The stroke on the letter 'M' is not consistent and something is wrong with the letter 'P'. The letter 'M' does not look like the letter 'N'
General Feedback
  • We should be able to understand our letters when we design them.
  • measurements need to be specific.
  • spacings are also important

Reflections

Experience
Honestly, I never thought doing typography can be so exhausting but knowing that it is a very skillful subject is very interesting to me, I find it difficult doing this part of the assignment. I really hope I could build my skill in this part of the task a little more in the future.

Observation
If I were to be in the industry where we have to create fonts or create alignments in a magazine, I would know what type of font I would design. Designing a font takes energy and patients, which someone like me can make me angry at times. However managed to learn a few things, not make a perfect outcome but I knew I put effort into my work.

Findings
In this case, I learned a lot about font designing, it's insanely intense for me, and I wish I had the patients to understand and create more letters. However, I would use these designs in the future and improvise them to make them better.

Further Readings

1. Practical Font Design:  Third Design By David Bergsland

Fig 7.7 Practical design by David Bergsland (21/5/2022)

I only had the chance to read the preview, so based on what I read is that there's art typography, especially on where go around the world. It comes as a culture in every design you see, or in each country, with different textures or rounded or even pointy the letters are. The letter plays a significant role in each font.

2. Advanced Typography from Knowledge to Mastery by Richard Hunt

Fig 7.7 Article by Richard hunt (30/5/2022)

Designing a typeface is very important especially when it comes to sizes, shapes, or even being designed with texture. All letters should be created with caution as well as punctuation marks in order to type out in our modern IT gadgets so that we could type them out in different media to express our feelings. That way it can be readable to the readers when they view what you typed.
