Week 9 - Week 14
DPI | Final | Cinemagraph - Self-Titled

Self-Titled is an exploration project for the students to express their own individuality and reflect their personality in digital art self-expression. The main idea is to build up self-confidence and discover their interest.

The term "cinemagraph" was coined in 2011 when photographer Jamie Beck and digital artist Kevin Burg used the technique to animate some of their photography and wanted a name other than "animated photo". Photographers were already exploring that way of showing photos with animation, but it was their body of work that attracted attention and got people doing their own cinemagraphs. Suddenly it was trendy to animated Gifs again, although those modern examples were not based on clipart from the early days of the web, really photographs with an area showing minor and repeated movement.

Visual Research

I originally have the idea of my picture being separated from reality and non-reality as if the other side was photoshopped in a cartoon manner, but it was disapproved by our lecturer and I needed to restart again with my research.

We were given a template to show our progress as well, click here to check it out!

At this point, I didn't like what my background looks like, so I decided to change it into a better and more suitable for my own theme and sketch.

Reflection

Throughout this Digital Photography semester, I find myself discovering new things I didn't know about photography. Which led me to try new things apart from photoshop. It is interesting how photography manages to capture parts of what we don't know about the world, which meant photographs that catches your attention on the world you see in your head instead of the world you see in reality. In the end, it is all about capturing the moment you see now rather than seeing it with your mind.

Observations

When it comes to observations, like I said previously, it is all about capturing moments. However, one thing I discovered while doing these tasks, it has one thing in common, which is combining elements. In other words photoshop-ing your own creativity on an empty canvas with pictures that were given in the outside world. It is so interesting to me that people could create that illusion that carries out in the industry of photography till the future.

Findings

Finally, I managed to create my own creativity with these techniques throughout the entire semester. However, I am quite disappointed that I wish I could do better in terms of photoshop. There are many photo references that look so much better, which is hard to compete in my opinion. I will further my research and practice on this in the future to up my skills so that I could make it to the level I am satisfied with. To finish this off, I in fact enjoyed learning photography and wish to do better in the future.
