Task 3B: Type Design and Communication
Lectures
Week 10
On week 10, we have been given a brief for our next task which is Task 3B, we were assigned to express topographically a social message, greeting, or the like, that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor's University or society at large.
- Set a margin. Create columns and rows.
- Sketch your ideas down.
- You may create lettering, modify existing letters or use existing types to communicate your message.
- Save as PNG (without background and with a 7pt white outline) and as PDF, upload the PNG to your E-portfolio and embed the PDF (by uploading it first to your G-drive) in your e-portfolio
- Screengrab your phone with the sticker sent.
You may use minor graphical elements or visuals to aid in your message and design. You may use the appropriate color schemes after getting the black and white version approved. Ensure that the expression occupies the space and is legible and readable for its intended use.
Upon completion of the designed sticker, selected stickers will be used for social platforms Telegram/WhatsApp. Design an attractive, functional, and visually impactful sticker. You may use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the task.
Week 11
Although it was a public holiday, we had a rapid session in checking out the progress and the sketchings we did for Task 3B, right after having feedback, we can proceed with digitizing the sketches into Adobe Illustrator.
Instructions
Task 3B; Type Design & Communication
We were given the opportunity to utilize minor graphical elements or visuals to aid our message and typography design. We are not allowed to use the existing typeface but we can modify those existing typefaces. However, we have to make sure that the expressions occupy the space and are readable for the intended use.
Sticker design;
- colors to utilize only: Black, White, and Red (can be shades of red)
- no gradient or glow effect is allowed
- add an outline around the word you have designed
Visual Research
We have to create 5 drafts sketched for our chosen social message, our lecturer has provided us a list of social messages to choose from. So I chose 'Eid Mubarak', I made a little visual research on the font designs which look good to my liking.

I choose option 4 because it has a Raya holiday feeling to it.

I wasn't quite happy with how it turned out because it looked way too plain, so I decided to Illustrate a moon so it matches the 'Eid Mubarak' sign, I also replaced the letter 'A' with Taylor's logo.

Experimenting

Coloring
As for the colors I tried to go for a different dark blue or light orange, for the wording, I want to go for a sort of pink and nude color. It also looked a little plain for the background, I added some dots for lights and some stars.

Feedback
Specific Feedback:
Based on the other's feedback I decided to take notes on what I have to do to fix my design as well.
- Typefaces can be improved.
- The moon Illustrations can have a little bit of improvement such as adding patterns to them.
General Feedback:
- Taylor's Logo must be in black color or the original color, don't change it to any other color.
- Outlines must 7pts
- Stickers made must be original, not the 512X512 version, or else the picture will be small.
Reflection
Experience
I actually enjoyed doing this task, however, I do have to make some improvements to my typefaces, It isn't how I wanted in the end but the practice I need. Though it's a skill for me to improve in, so that I could be better in it, in the future. I never knew making stickers takes a skill of a designer to be published, but now that I know I feel somewhat proud of myself for achieving this task. Again, it takes skill to design a typeface, and I need to improve on it.
Observation
Since the social message I chose is 'Eid Mubarak' I have a hard time picking out the colors for my letterings, especially for the background, I wasn't sure if should go for a lighter color or a dark color. Therefore I stick with the lighter color.
Findings
In the end, I found out that it takes time to design your own typeface in order to create a sticker. It does put me in a rough spot to create my own typeface as we have so many options to choose from, and so many inspirations to choose from, we are entitled to create our own. However, I managed to get through it by doing my sketches. So far, I am alright with the designs I have created. I still need to explore more on typography, from task 1 till task 3, so many improvements I could have done really. Hopefully, this is a lesson I can learn from in the future.
