Project 1

Week 1

For week 1 I didn't manage to attend class but I was updated by my classmates that I was to form a group of 6 and we were to discuss the artistic design proposal. I managed to get into a group by the end of
week 1. As I was updated by the brief, we also get to have met before our next class to propose our ideas.

We created a Muro board on what to discuss about our proposal, and that is since we all agreed on the Chinese New Year.

Week 2
For week 2 we were briefed by a supporting student with special needs with two counselors.
Secondly, we have a guest lecturer, Mr. Vinod, on how we should do our research properly and aesthetically.

Visual culture
What is visual culture?
Take a school emblem as an example, a badge indicates loyalty to an organization.
Mr.Vinod proceeds and talks about the history of emblems and badges that represent the cultures of our subject.
‘The science and the art that deals with the use, display, and regulation of hereditary symbols employed to distinguish individuals, armies institutions, and corporations.’

Rule of Tincture is the rule states "to never put a color on color or a metal on metal"

Week 3 - Public Holiday

Week 4 - Proposal Presentation

Week 5 - Data Collection (Some students go on the japan trip)

Task 1 | Proposal

Practical Lecture
It is okay to pick any other culture but to pick a culture with visuals, that defines words and literature. Narrow it down with the proposal that you will show later on, which comes with a rationale. Always refer back to a framework that Ms.Anis offered previously. Expand the values of what you have. Research should contain all that is shown in the Design system.

Topics my group and I discussed
- Chinese New Year Culture
- Mexican Culture
- Thaipusam Culture
- German Culture

Culture of interest and research

These topics are way too mainstream and easy to understand, therefore we need to provide deeper research that allows the topic to show value and matches the pyramid system.

Week 1 (12/01/23) | Google meets
In the end, we decided to stick with the culture of the Chinese New Year. However, we were having doubts about each subject of the Chinese new year. There are many entertaining cultures regarding the Chinese new year which includes the year of the rabbit, lion dancing, Chinese opera entertainment, and of course many more. We decided to stick to those 3 instead.

3 main subs
- Lion dance
- Year of the rabbit
- Chinese Opera entertainment

The origins of the Chinese New Year are steeped in legend. One legend is that thousands of years ago a monster named Nian (“Year”) would attack villagers at the beginning of each new year. The monster was afraid of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red, so those things were used to chase the beast away. Celebrations to usher out the old year and bring forth the luck and prosperity of the new one, therefore, often include firecrackers, fireworks, and red clothes and decorations. Young people are given money in colorful red envelopes. In addition, the Chinese New Year is a time to feast and visit family members. Many traditions of the season honor relatives who have died.

It is mostly a small gift design for the culture itself that represents each festival/entertainment. We decided to go for the pao designs but we weren't sure how the process will go. We went ahead with the lion dance in the beginning first.

Week 2 (17/1/23)
- Proposal on the sketches is a bit broad and needs to be enhanced a little.

Week 3
- No class - public holiday

Week 4
- According to Mr. Asrizal - I think the 1st idea makes more sense as compared to the rest.

Week 5
- Japan Trip -

Reflection

My experience for this module was quite interesting, I learned a lot from my teammates about the Chinese new year culture, for example, I wasn't of how the year of the rabbit has different elements.
However, I do have trouble communicating with my group mates at the time, especially with time management. It took a hard turn for me, but towards the end I managed to get through it.
