Invisible Set Extension (Pre-Production)
Week 5 -
So we are to begin with our sketches, thumbnails, and moldboard. I wasn't quite sure where to start actually so I just put in whatever I thought made sense. I wanted to go with a Dessert Sci-Fi city. However, it changed along the way.

I looked for some references before sketching my thumbnails. So I could Photobash them later.

Week 8 (Progression)
I ended up choosing Fig 1.3 and Fig 1.2, I decided to just mix and match with my environment a little bit.
Did some refinements as well, on the ambience and the city, the flow of the ocean.

Week 6
Waves and the perspective are not aligning. Make sure the views of the wave are similar to the perspective you are looking for.
Always have your values right.
Pick the image, turn it into black and white, then use gaussian blur, and start building from there. City 1- laser beams is VFX, City 2- perspective is off, City 3- have some highlights here and there, Desert 4- It is fine, base plate makes sense, find a better crate image, the planes and rocks are addition, Mountain 2- base plate does not reflect, need to know the levitation and need to know where is precise. Can use photobashing. Base plate should be covered 70-80 percent
Week 8
Overdoing it, start with big shapes, don't worry about the details just yet, base the original plate on what you want to add. Focus on your background foreground and front. Add a reference pic for better bashing.
Week 9
Scenic views and how to portray your ideas, when something is further it has lesser details, learn how to blend it, start simple first, and think about the environmental effects on the rocks, like buried by sand/moss/dirt and so on, look up Thailand island rocks.
Week 12
Refinements can be done in final project. It looks better, add a little detail on city rock, look at rim lights and highlights make it subtle (like 30-60 percent opacity. The white on the waterfall should not be too white, use off white instead. Give the rocks a little bit of imperfections, give it a little depth so that it is overlapping to make it look more natural. The water shouldn't be on the edge, break it out and overlap it. The buildings are okay it works. The water is reflective and the lights will reflect into the water causing it to shimmer. Break the monotonous feel on the ground, if you have backlight, the elements will be more solid, have the shadows to be more purple. Highlight rim light, make 3 different types of floating rocks then just copy and paste them.
Reflection
Invisible Set Extension within digital matte painting is a subtle yet remarkable art form, employing meticulous techniques to seamlessly expand and enhance on-screen environments. It's a masterful blend of technical finesse and creative ingenuity, allowing artists to extend landscapes, cityscapes, or even entire worlds beyond their physical limitations. The magic lies in the ability to intricately weave digital elements into live-action footage, maintaining visual cohesion while expanding the scope of storytelling. It's a testament to the power of detail and precision, where each pixel meticulously placed contributes to a larger illusion that captivates audiences without them even realizing the artistry behind the scenes. Invisible Set Extension is a testament to the marriage of technology and artistry, where the boundaries of reality are elegantly blurred to enrich cinematic experiences.
